When he wanted to he could be charming, and the clarity of thought with which he viewed these professional matters was matched by his ability to share his views with others. This duality lies at the core of Nelson’s psyche, and for two centuries historians have struggled to understand the mind of Britain’s greatest national hero. At least one psychologist has blamed the more negative aspects of Nelson’s character on his childhood, and the early death of his mother. Catherine Nelson (née Suckling) died when Horatio was nine, but as late as 1804 Nelson expressed his strong and lasting love for his mother, almost as if she had become an emotional crutch for him.

Rear-Admiral Graves in the Defiance later described the battle as ‘the hottest action that has happened this war’. On board the Elephant, Nelson was watching the course of the battle, accompanied by the flagship’s commander, Captain Foley, and Lieutenant-Colonel Stewart of the 49th Foot. Stewart claimed Nelson had turned to him when the battle was at its height and said that it was warm work, but ‘I should not be anywhere else for thousands’. He also observed that ‘these fellows hold us a better jig than expected’, but he never doubted his fleet would prevail.

It was too late. Before dawn Nelson had formed his fleet into line of battle, and was closing with the enemy as fast as the light breeze would allow. Nelson was already on deck wearing his dress uniform, replete with his orders of the Bath and the Crescent, and the finery of an admiral. He was a highly visible figure, and would make a conspicuous target. His fleet was in two lines several miles to windward of the Allies, with the Victory (98) leading the more northerly line and Vice-Admiral Collingwood in the Royal Sovereign (98) leading the other.
