William Hammond, Father of American Neurology Turning back to the early figures, in 1888, in the opinion of a colleague: “Professor Hammond … has perhaps been among the busiest of active practitioners in America … and [his] investigations and records have established him as the father of, and the authority in American neurology” (letter quoted in Blustein, 1991, p. 94). Naturalist The son of a physician, William Alexander Hammond (1828–1900), was born in Annapolis, Maryland.

Psychiatry Assailed As a sequel to these developments, in 1894, when the psychiatrists were planning a special program to celebrate the 50th annual meeting of their American Medico-Psychological Association (later the American Psychiatric Association), it was natural for them to invite Weir Mitchell to address them. A later section with Wallenberg and Gordon Holmes included the brain of birds. Drawings in color by Edinger himself were beautifully reproduced. In 1902, Edinger at last had his own room in the institute, he was 47 years old, and had an assistant and a few students. It was here that the Neurological Institute originated. In 1914, the year the University of Frankfurt was founded, Edinger was appointed Professor of Neurology and his institute was made a part of the university but was supported by private funds from the Ludwig Edinger Foundation.
