Few of David's missives to his father are so priggish, but the propitiatory tone, which was in later years to recur in letters to others, died out only gradually. Most letters reported the news of the rather claustrophobic, petty-genteel inbred society of Lichfield, where the Garricks, despite their poverty, were well connected and popular. The Captain was anxious both about his family's health and their financial well-being, and it was young David's diplomatic duty to convey necessary truths about their indebtedness and his mother's frequent illnesses without unduly alarming or depressing his father.
